My research centers on various aspects of measurement, control and dynamics of quantum systems, particularly with application to quantum technologies.
Several manifestations of energy begin to exhibit quantum behavior at the nanoscale –examples are mechanical energy and electrostatic energy. These quantum effects can lead to complex and surprising behavior in small aggregates or assemblies of nanoscale elements. It has recently become possible to precisely create and probe such assemblies in both condensed and gas phases, and my research is focused on modeling, understanding and controlling the dynamics of such coupled, few-body systems that can exhibit quantum coherent, or partially coherent dynamics.
I am particularly interested in (i) the dynamical properties that emerge at the few-body level as a result of quantum coherence, (ii) identifying structural features that help to preserve quantum coherence in many-body systems, and (iii) utilizing dynamical properties that result from quantum coherence to develop quantum technologies.
Prior to joining Sandia National Labs I was a postdoc at the University of California at Berkeley in the group of K. Birgitta Whaley, and a graduate student at the University of Queensland in the group of Gerard J. Milburn.
